The emotions

Emotions are part of human nature. They give us information about what we are experiencing and help us to know how to react. We feel emotions from the time we are babies. Babies and young children react to their emotions with facial expressions or actions such as laughing, hugging, or crying. They feel and show emotions, but they do not yet have the ability to name the emotion or say why they feel the way they do.

Emotional awareness helps us uncover what we need and want (or don't want). It helps us build better relationships. This is because being aware of our emotions helps us to talk clearly about our feelings, avoid or resolve conflict better and overcome difficult feelings more easily.
This is why, through exercises such as the one below, we can teach children, from a very young age, to name emotions and recognise them.
